Local New West events: Thursday March 2 to Sunday, March 5

From musicals to business launches, and even a thrift sale...there's lots to choose from

Thursday, March 2

  • aBIOTIC. Three installations look to abstract and synthesize the mysterious and ethereal behaviours of non-biological factors. On until April 23. New Media Gallery.

  • Katrina Ewanchuk. The artist’s Elements of Nature will be on display until March 31. Second floor, New West Public Library’s main branch.

  • Landscape of Tranquility. This work by Wenyan Xu expresses beauty, peace, and calmness through Chinese ink paintings. On until March 30. The Plaskett Gallery at Massey Theatre.

  • Shrek: The Musical. Don’t miss this fairy tale production, brought to you by the talented students at New West Secondary School. Running until Saturday, March 4. Tickets start at $18. Massey Theatre.

  • Common Threads. Victoria Mitchell’s work acknowledges the interconnections between various entities, explored through art. On display until March 26. The Gallery at Queen’s Park.

  • Coastal Dance Festival. In its 16th edition, this event honours Indigenous stories, songs, and dance from the northwest coast, Canada, and around the world. Tickets start at $26. 8pm. Anvil Centre.

Friday, March 3

  • Uptown spring market. A number of artisan vendors will be on site to showcase and sell their amazing wares. 5 to 9pm. Royal City Centre and Westminster Centre.

  • Shrek: The Musical. Tickets start at $18. Massey Theatre.

  • Coastal Dance Festival. Tickets start at $26. 8pm. Anvil Centre.

Saturday, March 4

  • Thrift sale. Along with some incredible local deals, there will be coffee and muffins available. 9am to noon. Knox Presbyterian Church, 403 E. Columbia St.

  • Anne of Green Gables. Meet one of Canada’s most beloved literary characters! Please note this event is for children between the ages of 8 and 12. Registration required—event is $20. 10am. Irving House programming room.

  • Free Little Art Gallery. This free outdoor event features live entertainment, arts and crafts workshops, light refreshments, and prize draws. 1pm. 815 Edinburgh St.

  • Lola’s Soap launch party. Enjoy soap samples, refreshments, and get to know Pat Wood, the owner of Lola’s Soap. 1pm. Arrieta Art Studio, 707 Front St.

  • Shrek: The Musical. Tickets start at $18. Massey Theatre.

  • Community Latin Social. Dance to new and old Latin favourites. This is an all-ages event. $10. 8:30pm. Sapperton Community Hall.
