Celebrate the Oscars, share a few laughs, and bust a move at a local fundraiser

Thursday, March 9

  • aBIOTIC. Three installations look to abstract and synthesize the mysterious and ethereal behaviours of non-biological factors. On until April 23. New Media Gallery.

  • Katrina Ewanchuk. The artist’s Elements of Nature will be on display until March 31. Second floor, New West Public Library’s main branch.

  • Landscape of Tranquility. This work by Wenyan Xu expresses beauty, peace, and calmness through Chinese ink paintings. On until March 30. The Plaskett Gallery at Massey Theatre.

  • Common Threads. Victoria Mitchell’s work acknowledges the interconnections between various entities, explored through art. On display until March 26. The Gallery at Queen’s Park.

  • Perkele group training. Newcomers are welcome to give kettlebell workouts a try! The theme for this one is “cardio.” Questions? Find Perkele on Instagram. 6pm. Queen’s Park east field corner.

Friday, March 10

  • The Oh Hello! Tour. Multi-talented comedian, actor, and writer Rahul Dua brings his brand of funny to New Westminster. Tickets start at $34. 7:30pm. Massey Theatre.

  • Paint night. [SOLD OUT] Enjoy a relaxing, fun night of painting—the evening’s theme is Country Roads. 7pm. Paddlewheeler pub.


Saturday, March 11

  • Spring Discovery Days. Delve into the many of the stories of the Fraser River. On until March 26. Admission is free for members. 10am. Fraser River Discovery Centre.

  • Bosley’s Bollywood fundraiser. $10 from the sales of each ticket goes to the New West Animal Shelter. Email [email protected] to get yours. 11am. Bosley’s at Columbia Square.

  • Outside/In, Out: Ontario. The street social includes food offerings from Beaver Tail food truck, an assortment of local vendors, and an appearance by Indigenous artist James Groening, who will lead an activity exploring woodland art. Admission is free. 2pm. Hyack Square.

  • Outside/In, In: Ontario. [SOLD OUT] Celebrate Canada without having to leave New West! This celebration features OKAN, a group that fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk, and global rhythms in songs about immigration, courage, and love. Free admission. 7:30pm. Anvil Centre.

  • Pride Pub Night. Get to know the new team at New West Pride, and they hope you’ll come on down to enjoy a pint or two and some casual conversation. 7pm. Begbie’s Tavern, 609 Columbia St.

  • Walk Right Back. This production tells the story of the most successful musical duo of all time, The Everly Brothers. Tickets start at $59. Massey Theatre.

Sunday, March 12

  • Poetic Justice. Featuring poets Ruth Kozak and Paul Raworth Bennett. Open mic sign-up will start at 2:50pm. You’ll need to email [email protected] to get the link. 3pm. Online via Zoom.

  • Academy Awards Night. Brought to you by the New West Film Society! Bring your family and friends to this fun night—and you’re welcome to dress up as either a movie character or for the Oscars. Don’t miss the Oscar night photo booth for those fab selfies, and you could even win a prize for being the best dressed. The event is free, but an RSVP is required. 4pm. Boston Pizza, 1045 Columbia St.

  • The Legends. Some of today’s finest Bollywood singers take you back to the golden era of Hindi film music. Tickets start at $22. 6pm. Massey Theatre.
