I was away for a week, but it feels good to have taken a break!
There’s been a lot happening over that time though, and it’s been amazing to see the support from so many of you who have joined us as Insider members. Folks fawn over a well-dressed cat at last year’s Pride Street Festival
We were absolutely stoked to see New West Pride release all the dates for its incredible events. You’ll want to mark your calendars because all the local moments you know and love are back from Aug. 10 to 20.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin
Pattullo closure. This is happening overnight tonight and into Friday. The closure is being done in part to remove the temporary pedestrian bridge near the bridge connector in New West.
🍣 Third time’s a charm? Signs have gone up at a space near 6th and Sixth announcing the return of Sushi Well. The restaurant shut down its previous location on Dec. 31.
💦 Waterfront Fun. There are all sorts of fun August events coming, and they’re brought to you by the City of New West. This includes a storytime event, sketching by the river, and even Circus Sundays. Here’s what to expect.
🔥 Fire ban. This is still in place in New West. This includes no smoking, vaping, charcoal or wood-burning BBQs, open fires/flames, and no chafing fuels.
Movie vote. Have you voted for which movie to watch during Movie by the River? The event is happening on Sept. 8. Voting closes on Aug. 22. Learn more about the movies you can choose from.
🎭 Creative space. There is still an opportunity to apply for Community Nights at Eighth and Eight. Eligible artists and groups should check out their page for more details.

🗞 In other news
Wanting to protect others. A woman spoke to Global BC to share experiences she says she’s had interacting with Adam Haber after meeting him at Narcotics Anonymous. Haber, a contractor who had ties to Last Door Recovery and Westminster House, is facing charges of sexual assault.
Firefighter’s death. Another person has died fighting wildfires, this time near Fort St. John. 25-year-old Zak Muise was from Ontario. Earlier in the season, a 19-year-old died from injuries sustained while fighting a wildfire. (CTV Vancouver)
Bye bye to The Bay. The location at Lougheed Town Centre is closing—though it looks like it is trying to sell off what it can, including fixtures and merchandise—before it 100% shutters.
Hacked. Looks like some not-so-great-folks had access to the Health Employers Association of BC’s servers. The access was from May 9 to June 10, but the breach wasn’t found until mid-July. (CTV Vancouver)
Canada’s crisis. A recently published report looks at the topic of surgeries in Canada, particularly which regions were impacted the most at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. (CBC)
Happy birthday! Playland’s wooden rollercoaster is 65 this year. This was marked yesterday with a celebration that included an historic donation to the PNE.
Explosive win. Philippines has won both the judge’s competition and the People’s Choice Award in this year’s Honda Celebration of Light.

Meet Irene Harvalis, a passionate quilter who is 89 years young. The retired Vancouver teacher has been living in New Westminster for the last five years and is a member of Burnaby’s Pacific Spirit Quilter’s Guild. Our Brianna Reeve had the pleasure of getting to know her—and we think you should, too!
We love playing a role in getting to know local New Westies. There are so many of you doing incredible work out there.
