⚓ New West mom is doing it again

Plus: more than two dozen New West events in seven days

Welcome to Thursday, New West.

Did you know that the New West Animal Shelter continues to take care of a significant number of critters—of all ages and sizes—in desperate need of loving families to be paired with?

There’s some good news about their scheduled Little Critter event, which you can read about below! And by the way, you can take a look at all the animals they have up for adoption by visiting the shelter’s petfinder page.

LOCAL HEADLINE

New West mom to run for Family Place (again!)

Vanessa Woznow, far right, runs through Quayside to the delight of supporters. Supplied

Vanessa Woznow is back at it for a fourth year: the mom of one will be running the hills of New West to raise funds for Family Place. She’s already started accepting donations.

“This year the hills haven't shrunk, and neither has goals. Help me once again get to $5000 in support of the amazing New West Family Place—an amazing non-profit that empowers parents, builds community, [and] inspires kiddos (of all ages!),” she explains on her Canada Helps page.

Woznow’s run will take place on Feb. 18.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin

🏆️ Reminder. You can nominate New West youth for awards from now until Mar. 15.

🏒 First responders. If you’re a first responder you can get tickets to tonight’s Canucks game against Arizona—plus your purchase means $10 contributed to New West’s Honour House, a not-for-profit supporting veterans, first responders, and their families.

😺 Pet licences. Don’t forget that pet licence fees are going up in the weeks to come. Avoid the fee increase in March by purchasing or renewing now.

🐕️ Woof. In case you missed it, the border collie in her owner’s stolen Fiat 500 Sport has been found. Zoey was in the vehicle when it was taken from the Downtown New West area early Sunday morning.

🗞 In other news

Donut winners. Yum Gourmet Donuts previously announced the winners of their “donuts for a year” contest. You can take a look at the big reveal via their Instagram page. In a sweet surprise, the shop ended up picking two winners!

GoFundMe continues. The GoFundMe for the Gabbassov family is still accepting donations. The fundraiser is in memory of Ravil Gabbassov, who was driving his son Timur home from a hockey game in Kelowna earlier this month when they were hit by a truck. Timur survived the crash on the Coquihalla; Ravil did not.

Happy tails at New West Animal Services

On Sunday, New West Animal Services was set to hold a “Little Critter” adoption event catered towards guinea pigs, rabbits, and other small animals.

Turns out they had to cancel it…because all the critters involved found a home before the event!

“We are sorry for any disappointment, but we have decided to cancel our event, as we have found homes for all of our hamsters, rats, and guinea pigs. (And one rabbit!) So, we will be holding off until we have more little critters for adoption. Thank you for understanding,” reads a post on the shelter’s Facebook page.

We love playing a role in getting to know local New Westies. There are so many of you doing incredible work out there.

It’s a team effort to be able to do this though, and we need support from the community. Become an Anchor Insider member today so we can keep covering all the cool things New Westies are doing!
