Team Turtles of Skwo:wech Elementary took home second place in the Reading Link Challenge. The placement is the highest in New West’s history. Supplied.

It’s an intense, months-long tale of books, of pencils, and colour-changing cups. Of last-minute hiccups, and a couple of pyjama-laden bluffs.

We sat down with members of Team Turtle—the Grade 4/5 team from Skwo:wech Elementary that recently took home a massive prize in a local reading competition.

🗞 In other news

Book with a pharmacist. As of today, you can book an appointment online to see a pharmacist. Earlier this month, pharmacists were given the ability to prescribe for 21 ailments, as well as for contraceptives.

Heat emergencies. The BC government is expanding access for people who have low incomes and/or are considered medically vulnerable. This includes earmarking $10M for free, publicly funded portable air conditioners.

Mixed reactions. Two climate consultants are sharing their mixed reactions regarding Tuesday’s announcement, saying there are some better, more cost-effective options that could be adopted, and that planting trees as an option should also be considered. (CBC Vancouver)

Wildfire snapshot. There are nearly 100 fires burning around the province. The fire burning in the Horseshoe Bay area is burning at about 1 hectare—so, about 80% of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. (Global BC)

Robbery arrest. New West PD say it’s recommended charges against a suspect after a person was robbed of their phone and wallet last Friday. The robbery happened in the area of 4th Ave. and Ash St.

Byelection committee. The New West Progressives say they’ve struck a byelection readiness committee after school trustee Dee Beattie admitted to being behind a burner Twitter account earlier this month.

Saying sorry. The City of Vancouver is apologizing after a number of seniors were kicked out of Chinatown Plaza Mall last month. The group was doing tai chi. (CBC Vancouver)

Would you pass? A recent poll by Leger found that only 23% of the folks they polled could pass a Canadian citizenship test. (CTV)
