Spring break events if you’re sticking close to New West

If you aren’t planning to leave the city to get away for spring break, not to worry. There are tons of things you can do to give you and your family some time to rest and recharge.
Check out some local art. There are a number of exhibits you can visit, including the New Media Gallery’s ZOOVEILLANCE, the Vytynanka showcase at the Plaskett Gallery, and The Natural Flow Meets Art at The Gallery at Queen’s Park. We always publish events over a seven-day period in our Thursday editions.
Love literature? EVENT’S Annual Used Book Sale is happening this week. As advertised on their page, it’s taking place from Mar. 18 to 22 at Douglas College.
Do something good. Canadian Blood Services is holding a donation drive event at the Anvil Centre on Thursday, Mar. 21.
Watch a show. Cheaters will be opening on Thursday, Mar. 21, and runs until Mar. 24 at the Anvil Centre. You can grab tickets online.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin
⚾️ Support the Diamondsides! The New West + South Burnaby baseball team is holding a 50/50 fundraiser. One ticket is $5, or you can get 3 for $12. If you’d like to support and purchase tickets, take a look at their Instagram page for more info. The draw will take place June 8 at Queen’s Park.
✍️ Applications open. Vendor applications are open for New West Pride. You can access all the details via the group’s site.
🎷 Don’t forget. Jazz at the Anvil’s final concert of the 2023-2024 season will be taking place on Tuesday, Mar. 26. It will feature the R&B Allstars. Purchase tickets via TicketsNW.

🗞 In other news
Annual water main flushing. The City of New West says this will be taking place from Mar. 18 to May 1. If your water is looking a little cloudy, make sure to run your tap until the water clears up.
Record-breaking. A number of temperature records were broken over the weekend—40, to be exact. Of local note included places like Abbotsford and West Vancouver. (CityNews Vancouver)
Get a grant. The grant application process is now open for individuals and groups in New West to apply for a neighbourhood small grant. (New West Record)
Cheers! Steel & Oak is number one! The made-in-New West brewery’s Sunglow Hefeweizen was recently voted the best wheat beer in the country on Untappd.
🤩 Community spotlight

Next month, Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar will be opening its doors to everyone to share Langar (a vegetarian meal) and to celebrate Vaisakhi this April with community members!
The temple has been in the New West community for more than 100 years, first opening in Queensborough in 1919.
The tour will take place on Thursday, Apr. 11. If you are interested in attending, it is recommended you register in advance. Head coverings will be provided, or you can bring your own. You will also need to remove your shoes for the tour inside.

The Notorious Grey Fox. They are now open—though they’ve noted they are still in a soft launch phase. You can visit them at 319 Governors Ct., Unit #101.
L’onore Pizza. If you happened to miss Pi Day (3/14) you can make up for it with a visit to this Victoria Hill pizza spot.
Hive Cafe. If you’re a big fan of sitting in the sun and sipping on your coffee or tea, Hive probably has the ambiance you’re looking for.
