City shares winners in 22nd Street challenge

The city recently announced that out of 82 submitted development ideas for the 22nd Street area, it had managed to pick two comprehensive winners instead of just one. “The Same Station in an Urban City” and “22nd Street Courtyard Community” by JIM Architecture and Peter Williams respectively ended up tying in this category.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin

🔒️ Plans to close. Mila + Paige, whose owner recently announced the closure of the store’s second location in Vancouver is planning to break the lease on her Downtown New West location. Anita Dunn has not given an exact date of when she’ll be shutting down. The store has been in the city for eight years.

🏃 Steel & Oak 5K. The brewery says its event is already 90% sold out. If you’re planning to run, you’ll want to register as soon as possible. Registration prices are set to go up tomorrow. (Friday, March 8)

⛑️ First aid training. New West Youth is offering a course from 9am to 4pm. There are only 12 spots available, so if you know someone who may be interested in getting their skills up to date, let them know about this course!

🗞 In other news

Selina Robinson. The Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA has left her caucus, saying the move was due to antisemitism. Her choice to sit as an independent comes a few months after she made remarks regarding Palestine. (CityNews Vancouver)

Nurse suspension. After assaulting a patient last year, Errol Latchman has been suspended for a month by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives. Latchman is from New West. (New West Record)

Live stream. After a live streamer was apparently promised money, investigators in Port Moody say a 19-year-old man may end up being charged. This person apparently deliberately rolled their vehicle into the water. (CBC Vancouver)

CT scanner. According to reporting by CTV Vancouver, Surrey Memorial Hospital’s emergency room lost their CT scanner for some time over the weekend. Their ER is considered among the busiest in Canada.

Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo returns for another year

Gamers: you’re going to want to mark June 22, 2024 on your calendars—that’s when the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo returns to New West. The event is put together by Gamedeals, a gaming store based in Downtown New West.

“We are so excited to bring more gaming, more music, more...experience, with our community partners (old and new) helping to grow the expo as much as possible within the confines of our amazing venue. Ticket sales have begun, and website updates are coming as quickly as we can get them,” explains the main page on the event website. 

The event will be again taking place at the Anvil Centre. A Facebook events page is already up and running where people can ask questions and talk about what to expect. You can check them out on Instagram too!
