Happy Tuesday!

Well, I’m back from a small vacation—didn’t go anywhere and actually had my lovely in-laws over for a visit—and I’m not going to lie, coming back is always a challenge because you have to remember how you did your job 😂

We enjoyed so much: dinner at El Santo, went on a walk through Quayside, caught the new D&D movie at Landmark (I liked it!) took in a game of baseball at Queen’s Park, and also walked through it to look at the floral displays, including the beautiful volcano, which is still there.

As the weather gets nicer there’s a lot to look forward to—scroll on down to see what’s happening locally because, as usual, there’s a lot.

🩰 Auditions. The Royal City Youth Ballet is holding auditions for its production of The Nutcracker. Auditions are happening June 25, and dancers must be 7-18 years of age. Email [email protected] for more info.

🗓️ Red Dress Day is May 5. Join your community to honour murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people, 3pm at Hyack Square.*

🗞 In other news

Strata rules. The province has made changes to the Strata Property Regulation. The rules now protect children, future dependents, and spouses or partners of current residents. This comes after some stratas made changes that would have prevented the aforementioned from living in these buildings when last November’s amendment to the Strata Property Act came into place.

Surrey crime. In what appears to be two separate cases, one man was stabbed and another shot just hours apart in the Whalley neighbourhood on Sunday night. The victim of the stabbing was also stabbed two weeks ago on a SkyTrain. (CTV Vancouver)

PSAC. The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Treasury Board has been reached. This covers about 120,000 federal government workers in Canada. There are still about 35,000 Canada Revenue Agency workers on strike. (CBC)

Wildfires. About 10 of them were sparked over the weekend, with two of them being wildfires of note. Those same two fires are believed to have been caused by people. (Global)

Power charge. BC Hydro wants to make changes that would give those who charge their electric vehicles a bit of a cost break: it’s applied for a time of use rate. That means the rate would change based on whether someone used electricity during peak hours. (CityNews Vancouver)

Record-breaking. A bunch of weather records were broken over the weekend—albeit in the Interior. (CTV Vancouver)

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

New fire chief, familiar face

From acting fire chief…to the new fire chief.

The City of New Westminster announced on Monday Erin Williams will hold the post, after Tim Armstrong retired in 2021. Chief Williams has held the role on an interim basis since early 2022.

He has worked for New West Fire and Rescue since 1995, working as a fire fighter until 2009 when he became a rescue unit lieutenant. He is also a longtime New West resident.
