Downtown New West gets more magical with fairy doors

The homes were decorated by families at New West Family Place

If you’re taking a stroll through downtown New West, you may see some newly built homes—for fairies.

The houses are fun-sized for good reason: the doors are meant to welcome the mystical creatures to the city, and put a smile on the faces of human-sized visitors. Beads, shells, moss and glittery flowers adorn the little entrances, which can be found on the trees and safely off to the side along sidewalks.

All of the fairy doors were decorated during an event held by New West Family Place at River Market last month.

This is one of three Downtown Business Improvement projects funded through the public space activation grant. In June, New West Anchor spoke to another creator whose adorable chalk art was funded through the same initiative. Ruby Campbell applied for the grant in the case of the fairy doors project.

“My plan was to place fairy doors throughout downtown New West for residents, visitors and others to stop and experience a bit of magic,” she tells New West Anchor.

Fairy doors have long been popular in the city, and can be found in areas like Queen’s Park and Queensborough.

A total of 20 fairy doors were installed downtown on Sunday. Watch out for the miniature homes along Columbia Street, Carnarvon Street, Front Street, and River Market. Anyone who spots a fairy door downtown is encouraged to tag @FairyDoorsNewWest on Instagram.
