Welcome back, On Your Block!

After a successful first year, Odihi's festival returns to Tipperary Park on Saturday, July 8

What began as New West resident Efe Fruci’s hope to have a block party a few years ago has successfully evolved into a festival that’s become so big, it continues to take over a local park.

“I asked my husband Thomas, 'do you think it'd be weird if I ask all our neighbours to bring a chair, bring a table, form a long line on our street, and just have a potluck dinner and get to know each other?'" Fruci told The Anchor last year. “[This was] something I was thinking of because it’s common for me, and my culture, and just people gathering.”

After applying for a series of grants, and coordinating guests and performers, the first On Your Block Festival was held on July 9, 2022 to much acclaim.

This weekend, it’s returning for a second run.

On Your Block is back at Tipperary Park on Saturday, July 8 from 1 to 9pm—and there will certainly be more than a couple of chairs and a few tables on hand. From food trucks to local shopping, and even performances that’ll get everyone dancing, there’ll be something for everyone at this event.

Back once again is the kids’ dance party, which was one of the highlights of last year’s festivities. This year Rock N’Beau will be leading that party, happening from 2:30 to 3pm. Last year, a number of kids had their time to shine near the main stage and just dance, while many of the adults clapped and danced along.

If you do prefer to relax with a drink in hand, there will be a beer garden, too. What’s more, the performances are expanding to three stages this year: along with the beer garden stage, there will be a market stage. These two stages will offer performances from 2:30 to 7:15pm. Main stage performing will go for the duration of the festival, 1 to 9pm.
