Need storage in New West?

The City of New West is offering a unique, eye-catching storage option—with conditions

The mural on this storage space is called ‘Sounding the Land,’ and was created by Jenny Hawkinson. City of New Westminster.

Who wouldn’t want a majestic bird watching over their things?

If you’re a community group in need of some storage space, you may be in luck. And what’s more—the said space includes some beautiful, impressive art.

On Saturday, New Westminster’s Parks and Recreation team shared it was looking to lease out two secure storage spaces to qualifying community groups. As the description stands, this means individuals users would not qualify.

“Two secure storage bays…are available for rent to qualifying community groups,” the site linked to the Instagram post reads. “The 8’x10’ bays are equipped with lighting, insulation, and ventilation.”

Who created the art?

The work was done by Jenny Hawkinson, a Metro Vancouver visual artist who explores topics of displacement, contested territory, and public space. Not only does she work with paint: she also works with video, soundscapes, textiles, sculptures, and installation art.

According to her page, she enjoys working with found materials so that she can understand the world around her. “Her work playfully dances between politics and the poetic with the hope of subverting embedded meaning and creating space for dialogue.”

These murals were created with outdoor latex paint.

How to rent the storage space

There are certain requirements that’ll need to be met, with the conditions in priority.

  1. You are a New Westminster community sports group.

  2. You are another community group, and the priority order is as follows: youth or senior activity groups, not-for-profits, you’re a group from the New West School District, you’re a returning user of the storage space or you’re a new emerging user group. Commercial groups have last priority out of this list.

  3. You frequent the Queen’s Park fields: Queen’s Park east field, Queen’s Park stadium, Queen’s Park south field.

The groups awarded the storage space will be offered options to either pay a one-time fee of $10,000, or $250 each month. The $10,000 fee comes with a five-year commitment.

If you’re interested in this space, be sure to check out the city’s page with online instructions if you’d like to apply, or you can email [email protected].
