I know it was on Tuesday, but a big congrats to the Salmonbellies for nabbing their spot in the Mann Cup championship. That was a heck of a series against the Langley Thunder—whew!

A big congratulations to the New Westminster Salmonbellies as they are now just a handful of games away from potentially nabbing their 25th Mann Cup. Here’s what we know so far about the team they’ll be playing against, and when the next game is set to take place.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin

No one hurt. New West Fire and Rescue Services has confirmed to The Anchor there were no reports of injuries after a fire yesterday morning. It happened in the area of Lorne and Carnarvon streets, and was in a basement. No word on a cause, and it’s too soon to say whether it was suspicious.

Call for participants. Eighth and Eight is looking for exhibitors in the Children’s Graphic Novel Writing and Illustration Festival. See if you qualify.

Temporary move. For those who attend Five Stones Church, the group will be hosting church at different locations over the next bit. Find out about the times and locations.

Harm reduction training. If you can’t make today’s Purpose World Record naloxone training event, there’s another similar event happening at the main library branch on Sept. 21. Get the details regarding how to sign up.

Reminder. This Monday is Labour Day, so some of your favourite New West stops and shops may be operating on modified hours.

🗞 In other news

Getting worse. Some BC teachers say they’re struggling to tough it out as a shortage of teachers continues, with the BC Teachers’ Federation saying some classrooms might not be open for back-to-school next week. (CityNews)

Housing proposals. BC’s minister responsible for housing is looking for proposals from non-profits, First Nations, municipalities, and other groups that might want to get involved in creating about 3,500 rentals. (Global BC)

More money. The BC government posted a surplus in its latest audit, to the tune of a little more than $700M. (CTV Vancouver)

Cold case break. Police in Vancouver say a man has been charged in connection with a series of sexual assaults that go as far back as 2009. (CityNews Vancouver)

Going out of town? Environment Canada says if you’re planning to be in southeastern BC, a heads up that heavy rainfall is expected in some parts of the area. (CBC)

Another travel warning. Meantime, if you’re planning to head stateside, Global Affairs Canada has issued warnings for some parts of that country, tied to anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. (CTV)
