Check out the new Land Rover Defender for New West’s Honour House!

“We’re not crying…you’re crying!”

It’s how Honour House began its celebratory post over social media, thanking everyone who participated in the recent Land Rover Defender Service Awards. The group won a massive cash prize—and the above Land Rover Defender. The Defender is on its way to Honour Ranch in Ashcroft. Read more about Honour House’s November win.

💪 Empowering local business. Looking for tips to navigate the various impacts of your business? This workshop is for you. There is no fee, but registration is required. This is happening on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

🍔 Bevvies and Bites. This fundraiser is happening Saturday, Feb. 24 at Royal City Centre. You can still get tickets online. 

✍️ Write On! Admissions are still being accepted in non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Get your entries in to the Royal City Literary Arts Society by Apr. 15.

🐝 Become a vendor. The New West Farmers Market is still taking applications for its 2024 season. If you’d like to be a vendor, get your info in ASAP!

Anvil Centre feedback. The City of New Westminster has rolled out the engagement process in a bid to understand how people are feeling about its use. Take a look at the survey and fill it out online. 

Reminder. The deadline is coming up to submit thoughts on a favourite redesign of the 22nd Street area, with voting to end on Feb. 28. (New West Record)

Highway crash. One person has died and two others were injured after a crash along Hwy. 1, not far from the Sprott Street exit. Impairment is not believed to be a factor. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes. (CTV Vancouver)

Star-in-the-making. Arshdeep Bains of Surrey didn’t play, but his family was elated to hear he was called up for potential ice time in the game on Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets. (CBC Vancouver)

MLA Jennifer Whiteside announces reopening of office

Jennifer Whiteside says her community office will be celebrating on Friday, Feb. 23 with a Lantern Festival Open House, in the spirit of the Lunar New Year.

The closure of her office occurred after a fire that also resulted in the permanent closure of Head to Toes Spa in 2023. The fire took place in 2022. Since then, Whiteside and her team have been working remotely.

The event at the office will be happening on Friday, Feb. 23 from 4 to 6pm. Whiteside’s office is located at 335 Sixth St.

🍴 Where to eat and drink

Coaster’s Coffee. This delightful coffee shop recently extended its hours. It’s a great spot for—of course, coffee—but also for its baked goods and displayed art. Bonus: there’s a bus stop right in front of it.

The Flapper Lounge. If you haven’t had the chance to visit this speakeasy lounge yet, put it on your list. Plus, one of their happy hour items includes bottomless tots, “prohibition priced” at $5 per person.

AKD Kitchen. This ramen spot has brought back its student specials. On Thursdays from 11:30am to 3pm, students get a discount on the shop’s original ramen. Student ID is required.
